April 2015
This month, I traveled to New York City after visiting relatives in CT. New York is a place of wonders from fabulous architecture (think Flat Iron Building and Empire State Building), gorgeous Central Park, and museums and the best performances. I saw Tony Award winner Helen Mirren in The Audience and marveled at her ability to transform from 20-year-old Elizabeth to the 90-year-old monarch in moments. It is not all in the dressers, who accomplished clothing and wig changes right there on stage. It is her posture and subtle nuances that match the body language to the voice. That voice that would give meaning to a grocery list. She is a treasure. I also attended An American In Paris, also a Tony winner, the operas Aida (conducted by the incomparable Placida Domingo) and The Merry Widow (starring Susan Strohman) and explored the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MOMA, and the Frick among others. The most fun is people-watching and eating. Walking, walking, the subway, and walking. A fabulous energy keeps a body in motion, not wanting to miss a moment. It is rather like a ten course meal. It keeps coming and you try to find room for more as you savor every bite. NYC gets under your skin and into your blood.
